You Can’t Take It With You
Summer Youth Theatre 2010
July 30th through August 7th
VORTEX Repertory Theatre

VORTEX Repertory Theatre's Summer Youth Theatre stages the classic comedy You Can't Take It with You, written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.  Directed by VORTEX veteran company member Mick D'arcy, the production runs July 30th through August 7th at the VORTEX Theatre.
Winner of the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, You Can't Take It with You explores the world of an extraordinary family who live a celebration of individuality.  At first the Sycamore family seems to be mad - but the audience quickly realizes that if they are mad, then the rest of the world is madder.
The comedy in three acts delivers many surprises and odes to non-conformity, honoring the values of authenticity and uniqueness in life.  The original Broadway  production ran for 837 performances at the Booth Theater, and the play has been made into a movie by Frank Capra and enjoyed several television broadcasts.  A Broadway revival - helmed by Tony Award- winning director Anna Shapiro - opens November 14th.
The VORTEX Summer Youth Theatre production features a youth company of teenagers that include Cooper Acord, Hayley Armstrong, Colin Ashby, Joshua Braun, Rio Esquivel, Anjelica Hymel, Anissa L. McVea, Hannah Newcomer, Felipe Ramirez, Martin Ramirez, Harley Roberts, Wyndham Shortt, and Cassidy Timms.  Adult guest actors for the production include Steven Fay, Emily Fagan, Tyler Mabry, and John McNeil.
Ann Marie Gordon provides scenic design, with costume design by Talena Martinez.  Patrick Anthony provides lighting design, and Sergio R. Samayoa creates the sound design.
The Austin Chronicle named VORTEX's Summer Youth Theatre as "The Best Theatre for Kids That Treats Kids Like Grownups".  Now in its 19th year, the program has mentored hundreds of Central Texas students, teaming them with adult professionals to create numerous award-winning productions of world literature - including R.U.R., Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, The Visit, Machinal, The Frogs, and Moby Dick.
The summer program provides students with experiences in all aspects of theatre, including acting, technical theatre, and publicity.  Rehearsals and workshops are free to all participants.
Performances of You Can't Take It with You run July 30th through August 1st, and August 5th through 7th, at 8 p.m.  Tickets are $30 to $25 for priority seating, $20 to $15 for general admission, and $10 for "starving artists."
The VORTEX Theatre is located at 2307 Manor Road.  For more information and reservations, call (512) 478-LAVA (5282) or visit www.VortexRep.org.
