Out of Bounds
Southwestern University Sarofim School of Fine Arts
October 5th
Jones Theater

Southwestern University will host a one-night performance of Rajesh Gopie's one man production, Out of Bounds, playing October 5th in Jones Theater.  Playwright and actor Gopie runs through 28 characters with jaw dropping energy, providing insight into the confused state of being a South African Indian under apartheid - where the dangers were more hidden and unexpected.
More than a play about Indian culture, Out of Bounds embraces all people as it explores "how are we and where do we come from."  In fact, the family chronicle so moved Nelson Mandela that he requested a private performance.
The Sunday Tribune noted it was "tightly directed, beautifully written and brilliantly acted."   The play was hailed as "boundlessly brilliant" and "a gem" by The Citizen and as "one of the best plays you'll see this year" by The Sunday Times during its run in Johannesburg in 2005.
Durban-born actor, playwright, and producer Gopie is a graduate of the University of Natal, with dual majors in Drama and History.  He has toured India, Europe and South Africa with his own work, in addition to touring as the male lead in The Chimp Project by the world-renown Handspring Puppet Company.  Additional acting credits include the title role of Hamlet - directed by Janet Suzman - and "Mercutio" in Romeo and Juliet, directed by Clare Stopford.
Admission is free, and the performance begins at 7 p.m.  Jones Theater is located at 1001 E. University Avenue on the Southwestern University campus in Georgetown.  For more information, call (512) 863-1504 or visit www.southwestern.edu/sarofim.
