Grrl Action Summer Performances
Grrl Action and Rude Mechanicals
July 16th and 17th
The Off Center
Grrl Action
celebrates its 12th anniversary on July 16th and 17th as
approximately 20 girls take the stage and transform their
autobiographical writing into two powerful and personal public
performances. The shows play at 4 p.m. each day at The
Off Center.
Sponsored by the Rude
Mechanicals, the Grrl Action Summer Workshop is a three-week
program where 13- to 16-year-old girls envision, create,
publish, and perform original works for the stage - drawing
from each girl's own life experiences. The Grrl Action
summer workshop is led by Grrl Action Co-Managing Program
Directors Madge Darlington and Jodi Jinks, and enhanced by
workshops from professional women guest artists with expertise
in movement and writing
Girls who participate
in Grrl Action are given space, materials, skills, and guidance
as they work individually and as a group to generate poems,
stories, songs, collages, dances, and drawings from their life
experiences. The participants then craft this material into a
live performance and a published anthology, which is available
to the audience, free of charge, before and after the girls'
performances in July.
Grrl Action began in
2000 as a writing and performance program designed to empower
girls between the ages of 13 and 16 to find their public voices
while building confidence, interacting with girls from diverse
socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and creating
community. In 2007, based on the success of the summer workshop
and with multi-year support from Impact Austin, Grrl Action
expanded into a year-round program. This year-round model
invites girls to develop long-term artistic projects inspired
by their individual interests and passions with the help of
professional woman mentors who provide one-on-one attention and
guidance.
Admission to the
performances is free. Tickets will be available at the
door only and seating is first-come, first-served.
The Off Center is located
at 2211-A Hidalgo. For more information, call (512)
