Gerard Edery Sings Yupanqui
Esquina Tango
March 3rd
Esquina Tango Cultural Society Center

Singer, guitarist, composer and multi-linguist Gerard Edery brings new life to the classic stylings of Argentine folk music, interpreting the poetry and music of the late Atahualpa Yupanqui. He will reveal the cultural and emotional depth of his repertoire with a special concert event on Saturday, March 3rd, at the Esquina Tango Cultural Society Center.
Gerard’s vocal and instrumental virtuosity and innovative arrangements celebrate one of the major authors of South American folk music, helping in the process to preserve Atahualpa’s legacy outside of Argentina.  Recognized as a leading musical folklorist and a master singer and guitarist, he has at his command a remarkable range of ethnic folk styles and traditions from around the world - singing in fifteen languages and speaks four fluently.
Not only does Edery regularly uncover and preserve songs from Europe, the Middle East, South America and ancient Persia, he energizes these repertoires by interpreting them for contemporary audiences and by teaming up with some of the world's most highly acclaimed virtuoso musicians.  Gerard and his ensembles have been featured at Zankel Hall (Carnegie Hall), Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Merkin Concert Hall , Florence Gould Hall, the United Nations in New York City, the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Royce Hall in Los Angeles,  the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, the Fez International Festival of Sacred Music in Morocco, the Festival Cervantino in Mexico, the Vilnius International Folk Festival in Lithuania, the International Folk Music Festival in Warsaw and the Chicago World Music Festival.
Esquina Tango Cultural Society of Austin is a non-profit organization working to build a vibrant and diverse community in East Austin.  The group emphasizes culture, health, and dance - with an emphasis on Latino heritage, recreational tango and other Argentine traditions - to foster personal wellness and promote understanding of Latino culture.
The concert begins at 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $15 at the door.  Esquina Tango is located at 209 Pedernales Street.  For more information, call (512) 524-2772 or visit online at www.EsquinaTangoAustin.com.
