Butoh: danse macabre
Spank Dance Company
June 21st
Salvage Vanguard Theatre
Spank Dace Company
performers Mari Akita, Ellen Bartel, and Caroline Sutton Clark
present a monthly “dance of transformation” with
“Butoh: danse macabre.” The free performance
is offered the third Thursday of every month at Salvage
Vanguard Theater.
Butoh is a
contemporary avant-garde dance form that originated in Japan -
and which was first performed there in 1959. It combines
dance, theater, improvisation and influences of Japanese
traditional performing arts with German Expressionist dance
(Neue Tanz) and performance art to create a unique performing
art form that is both controversial and universal in its
expression.
The dance style has
evolved to become an international art form, with artists and
groups devoted to teaching and performing it all over the
world. This dance is an improvisation, and can be as
short at 20 minutes or as long as 60 minutes.
Salvage Vanguard Theatre
is located at 2803 Manor Road, and performances begin at 7 p.m.
