The Trash Project
Forklift Danceworks
August 27th and 28th
Austin Studios Tarmac
One of the most
anticipated theatre and dance events returns when Forklift
Danceworks re-mounts the troupe's award winning performance
piece, The Trash Project. Celebrating the Austin's Solid
Waste Services employees - while drawing attention to the
inherent artistry and skill in this work - the piece will be
revived on August 27th and 28th on the Austin Studios tarmac at
the old Mueller Airport.
When it debuted in
September 2009, the performances quickly sold out and played to
enthusiastic standing room audiences. The work was named
the "#1 Arts Event of 2009" by the Austin American
Statesman, "#1 Dance Event of 2009" by The Austin
Chronicle and winner of "Most Outstanding Dance
Concert" by The Austin Critics Table.
Forklift Danceworks
worked for several months with the City of Austin Solid Waste
Services Department to create the site-specific dance and
theatre experience. Billed as "an evening of dance
performed by the employees and machinery of the Solid Waste
Services Department," the free performances will feature
two dozen Solid Waste employees and more than 15 large
sanitation vehicles in a choreographed trash truck ballet.
Motivated by Artistic
Director Allison Orr's "desire to make visible aspects of
daily life which are often invisible," The Trash Project is
designed to educate audience members about waste reduction
while highlighting the people who work every day - often
invisibly - to keep our city clean and green. The performance
includes rear-loading trash trucks, a crane, and a bucket truck
- all choreographed on the outdoor, life-size stage of the
Austin Studios tarmac. Orr said the choreography for the
performance was inspired by the movement that the Solid Waste
Services employees perform in the course of their daily work.
Presented by
Forklift Danceworks - which staged a similar production with
the Austin Fire Department in 2001 - the production includes
choreography by Allison Orr. Noted Austin designer
Stephen Pruitt - experienced in large-scale outdoor productions
- once again creates the lighting and set design.
Award-winning musician and compose Graham Reynolds has created
an original musical score that will incorporate samples of the
Solid Waste machinery; the performance will feature a live trio
of piano, violin, and cello.
An anticipated audience of
more than 2,000 citizens are expected to attend - including
children, families, Solid Waste Services employees and their
families, arts lovers, and Austinites interested in
environmentalism. The performances are free, but tickets
are required. Reservations are available online at www.forkliftdanceworks.org/trash_reservations_pre-page.html.
The Austin Studios
tarmac is located at 1901 East 51st Street, on what was the
Austin Mueller Airport. For more information, call (512)
