Sweet Charity
SummerStock Austin
July 28th through August 7th
Rollins Studio Theatre at The Long Center
SummerStock Austin (SSA) -
the seasonal training program collaboration between St.
Edward's University and Zilker Theatre Productions - launches
its sixth anniversary season with the musicals Cabaret and Sweet Charity. The
two productions will play in repertory, with Cabaret playing July 22nd
through August 7th, and Sweet
Charity playing July 28th
through August 7th - both at the Rollins Theatre at The Long
Center.
More than 100
students - from Central Texas, Houston and Dallas - auditioned
and interviewed to be part of SumerStock Austin's sixth season.
Student performers and crew were selected from St.
Edward's University, Texas State University, Baylor University,
AMDA and Juilliard School of the Arts, and the University of
Texas at Austin - plus high school participants from McCallum,
Bowie, Dripping Springs, Westwood, McNeil, Cedar Park, Vista
Ridge, Leander, Blanco and Star Charter.
Based on Federico
Fellini's screenplay Nights of
Cabiria, Sweet Charity was
originally choreographed and conceived by Bob Fosse, with music
by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and book by Neil
Simon. Top hats, canes, slinky costumes and Bob Fosse's
stunning choreography typically outshine the true heart of this
charming musical.
The driving force is
a young woman trying to find relevance and fulfillment in an
America that didn’t readily offer opportunities to women.
On a more universal level, it’s also about being
trapped - trapped in dead-end jobs, toxic relationships, and
the gender roles imposed by a rigid, unimaginative value
system.
Featuring well known songs
such as “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and
“Big Spender,” Sweet
Charity is an upbeat, touching
tale of a young woman's search for “Something
Better.”
The production will
be directed by Ginger Morris and choreographed by Vincent
Sandoval. Michael McKelvey provides musical direction,
with lighting and set design by Larry Lehew.
