SoundSpace: Musicircus
February 4th
Blanton Art Museum
As a tribute to John
Cage on the centenary of his birth, The Blanton Museum of Art
hosts a special presentation of the seminal composer's 1967
masterwork with SoundSpace:
Musicircus. The performance
takes place on Saturday, February 4th, throughout the museum's
galleries.
The concert begins
with music on toy piano from the Austin Critics Table 2009
"Best Instrumentalist," Dr. Michelle Schumann.
The concert will include simultaneous musical
performances by the New Music Co-op, Bel Cuore Sax Quartet, the
Sun Ra tribute combo East Side Arkestra and the premiere of
works from composers Andy Sigler and Pierce Gradone - with an
amplified cactus and electric trombone. The music will be
paired with dancers from Ballet Austin, featuring choreography
from Michelle Thompson.
Continuing his research
into cross-disciplinary collaboration and new contexts for live
performances, musician Steven Parker - a doctoral student in
the Butler School of Music and Donald D. Harrington Fellow at
the University of Texas - was invited by The Blanton to draw on
the museum's resources in this, his third installation of the SoundSpace series.
Following the performance, visitors will have an
opportunity to participate in a community jam session, bringing
together the Musicircus performers and museum guests for a unique
noise-making experience.
The event begins at 2 p.m.
and is open to the public and included with museum admission.
The Blanton Museum of Art is located at 200 East MLK
Blvd, at the intersection of MLK and Congress. For more
information, call (512) 471-5482 or visit www.BlantonMuseum.org.
