Steam, Rose Colored Goggles and the Flight
of The Victoriana
Gnap! Theatre Projects
January 6th through 28th
Salvage Vanguard Theatre
Gnap! Theater Projects
opens 2012 by stepping back into the 19th Century with Steam, Rose Colored Goggles and the Flight of The
Victoriana - an improvised
steampunk miniseries. The production takes the stage at
Salvage Vanguard Theatre on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8
p.m. from January 6th through 28th.
Join the crew of The
Victoriana on their high-flying adventures as they "engage
the most revelatory and exquisite of 19th century alternative
universe technology," said director and show creator
Audrey Sansom.
"The most
challenging thing about directing
Steam, Rose Colored Googles and the Flight of the Victoriana is that most people don't even know what
'Steampunk' is," Sansom said. "And even after a
conversation on the themes of the Victorian period, the
Industrial Revolution, the Enlightenment and the Progressive
Movement, the anachronistic technologies inspired by Jules
Verne, and the cultural niche that is finding itself at home
all across the nation has piqued their interest, they are most
shocked by the idea of an improvised serial
narrative."
Sansom said the
clear advantage to a serial narrative is the pleasure and
satisfaction of watching a hero's journey play out. The
infinite possibility of a Steampunk world affords the performer
a universe of creative freedom, she noted so her approach
includes a minimal set - giving the impression of sails and
industry - with the players themselves creating environments,
inventions and aesthetics.
"In improve, we
usually create 'throw away' characters that we see for a scene
or a show but never meet again," she said. "By
embodying a series of archetypes, the crew of the Victoriana is
able to perform as the same characters every night in fresh new
ways."
Along with Sansom,
the cast includes Victoriana crew members Elizabeth Brammer,
Emily Breedlove, Julie Gillis, Brady James, Marc Majcher, Kevin
Miller, Jeff Mills, Gricelda Silva and Aaron Walthers.
Playing the Machine - which Sansom describes as "the
backbone of the show, the driving forces, the friends, foes and
foils" - are Howard Katz, Ashlee Medlin, Joel Osborne,
Jayme Ramsey and Leng Wong. In addition, the action will
be all set to a Steampunk score arranged improvisationally
every evening.
Tickets are $10 for
general admission and $5 for students. An eight-show pass
is also available for $40.
The Salvage Vanguard
Theater is located at 2803 Manor Road. For more
