The Paradox Players will debut the regional premiere of Don Fried's futuristic comedy, Getting Betta, at the 2012 FronteraFest Long Fringe. Performances will run January 24th through February 4th at The BLUE Theater, located at 916 Springdale Road.

Technologically-challenged senior citizen Michael lives in a retirement home where Betta - a virtual computerized assistant - is assigned to him against his wishes by the administration of the facility. After a brief period of conflict, Michael and Betta reach a truce and settle down to live together. However, as Betta acquires technology upgrades to make her more human, she becomes paranoid and schizophrenic - and things spiral out of control.

Award-winning film and stage actress Lana Dieterich - who starred in the 2011 Long Fringe production of Fried's Senior Moments - takes the title role of "Betta." The cast also features are long-time Austin actor Craig Kanne and recent Texas State University theatre graduate Brittany Flurry.

Getting Betta premiered simultaneously in Colorado and California in March 2011. Fried has seen his works performed throughout the United States, Canada, and England. In March, after directing the Austin production, he travels to London to work on the world premiere production of his play Phoenix, which was inspired by the life of British singer/songwriter Nick Drake.

The Long Fringe performances of Getting Betta run January 24th and February 2nd at 7 p.m., January 31st at 9:15 p.m. and February 4th at 1:15 p.m. Three additional performances will be staged at Howson Hall Theater in the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin, located at 4700 Grover Avenue, on March 2nd and 3rd at 8 p.m. and March 4th at 3 p.m.
