Arcadia
Austin Shakespeare
February 2nd through 19th
Rollins Studio Theatre

Austin Shakespeare - the only professional, classical theater company in Central Texas - opens the New Year with Arcadia, Tom Stoppard's comedy of wit and romance.  Performances will run February 2nd through 19th at Rollins Studio Theater at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.
Deemed by critics and scholars as one of the "finest plays in the English language," Arcadia was nominated for a Tony Award in 2005 for "Best Play" and again this year for "Best Revival of a Play."  Stoppard is now considered one of the most significant playwrights of the modern age.
"We love bringing scripts to life that have sparkling wit and brilliant language side by side with sex, romance and complex ideas," said Ann Ciccolella, Austin Shakespeare's Artistic Director.
The story traverses the past and the present in alternating scenes at the same English country home, from 1809 to 1993, when academics, mathematicians and literary types of the present seek to uncover a mystery in the home and garden two hundred years earlier.  Lord Byron, who is an unseen visitor to the 19th Century characters, stirs up a whirlwind as the parallel lives climax in a masquerade garden party - with the 20th Century characters waltzing the same moment of transformation with the lovers of the early 19th Century.
Performances will run Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.  Tickets range from $17.50 to $34.50, with $15 tickets for students.
To set the atmosphere for the play - and a romantic mood for Valentine's Day weekend - Austin Shakespeare will host a special evening on Saturday, February 11th, including traditional English high tea at 5 p.m. preceding the performance at 8 p.m.  The event will include an array of teas, tea sandwiches and authentic British sweets provided by Full English Café.  Tickets are $50 for the high tea or $80 the tea and performance.
Rollins Studio Theater is located in the Long Center for the Performing Arts at 701 West Riverside Drive, at Riverside and South First Street.  For more information and reservations, call (512) 474-LONG (5664) or visit www.TheLongCenter.org.
