Austin Museum of Digital Art -
Matrices and Entropy
Austin Museum of Digital Art
January 28th
Mexican American Cultural Center

Austin Museum of Digital Art debuts new music for percussion and electronics in a one-night concert on January 28th at the Mexican American Cultural Center.  Featuring Line Upon Line percussion with New York composer and performer Sam Pluta, the "Matrices and Entropy" concert includes works by Pluta, John Cage and Anders Vinjar - performed on metal, wood, skin, re-purposed consumer electronics, live video and state-of-the-art signal processing.
In 2009, Line Upon Line entranced a standing-room-only Austin Museum of Digital Art audience with performances of music by Xenakis and Nono.  This month, they will be joined by composer Pluta for his static-infected piece "Matrices" for three percussionists and electronics.  The sound work employs, among other objects, bowed flexitones, hand-held fans and two analog television sets. Pluta will also perform a work for live sound and video, as well as a structured electro-acoustic improvisation with Austin trombone virtuoso Steve Parker.
In honor of his 100th birthday, Line Upon Line will also recreate the rarely-performed John Cage piece "Variations II (1961)."  The realization for metallic instruments conjures a mysterious soundscape from Cage's score of overlaid transparent lines and points.
Also on the program is the Texas premiere of "+/-" by Anders Vinjar.  Premiered at the ULTIMA festival in Oslo, Norway in 2004, "+/-" explores the idea of "entropy" - or the degree of uncertainty in a system - by utilizing a large selection of percussion instruments and electronic sounds to oscillate between repetition and distortion.
Formed in 2009 at the University of Texas at Austin, Line Upon Line Percussion has expanded their repertoire through the commission of new works.   In 2011, the trio was nominated for an Austin Critics' Table Award for "Best Classical Ensemble" and released their first CD of four pieces written for the trio by Austin composers.   The group maintains educational and outreach roles with the Austin Chamber Music Center and has performed at various academic institutions around the country.
The Austin Museum of Digital Art is a non-profit institution whose mission is to engage the public, educate the community, and support artists in the creation, understanding and appreciation of digital art.  Founded in 1997, the organization is the world's first museum dedicated to digital art.
The concert performance begins at 8 p.m.  Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students.
The Mexican American Cultural Center is located at 600 River Street.  For more information and reservations, call (512) 423-4888 or visit www.amoda.org.
